Clarinetist Dexter Payne has performed from Tijuana to Paris, from Montreal to Buenos Aires. Highly ranked in Downbeat Magazine Readers Poll (2004 & ’06) and 2011 International Blues Challenge winner, Payne is equally at home playing Brazilian choro jazz (modern instrumental spectrum of musica brasileira – choro, samba & nordestina) as he is playing jazz and blues. And yes, you may also find him on the business end of an alto or bari sax, or even blues harp!

Beginning in the mid 90s when he went on a 2 1/2 yr walk-about, playing with bands and artists from Tijuana to Buenos Aires. During this time Dexter visited Brazil for 10 months, where he recorded with samba icon Beth Carvalho, and where met the late Gaudencio Thiago de Mello, composer/percussionist who in early life had coached soccer legend Garincha, with a championship Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro team. It was there he recorded his first instrumental album as lead solo voice, with Thiago and composer guitarist, Antonio Mello.

Four recordings with Thiago de Mello later, came Pra Você, this time with his own group of amazing players, which garnered a 4 star review in DownBeat Magazine.

Scroll back up for Dexter’s latest:   “Jazz For All”   by the same group, plus a taste of vocal magic by Elena Camerin Young. Made possible, in part, by a grant from Pathways to Jazz.
